While you can hold your weekly card game at any table in your home, having a dedicated poker room is a dream come true for poker enthusiasts. But even if you're lucky enough to have a spare room, coming up with the right design for your poker room isn't always easy. The key is to combine comfort and style so you and your guests feel like you've stepped into the elegant poker room at your favorite casino.

Color Scheme

Your poker room should be comfortable so you and your guests are happy to spend hours at the table. However, if you want it to have the feel of the poker room at your favorite casino, it should have a sophisticated look as well. Choose a rich, warm color for the walls that gives the room an inviting feel while also adding a touch of elegance. If your room is small, opt for lighter shades such tan, terra cotta or gold so the space doesn't feel too cramped. In a larger room, you can use a deeper color on the walls such as brick, eggplant or chocolate brown. Rich, dark, wood tones such as mahogany also work well in a poker room, so consider adding paneling to one or more of the walls.

Furnishings

The essential furniture items in a poker room are obviously the table and chairs. Poker tables are available in a variety sizes and styles, so choose a model that fits your room and your style as player. For serious poker enthusiasts, opt for a table that has a padded table rail so players have a cushion for their arms when they're leaning over the table all night. Padded chairs are also a must since you and your opponents will be seated throughout the evening. Leather-covered chairs add a sophisticated touch to the room. Look for chairs in a rich chocolate- or cognac-colored leather to provide a warm, elegant look. In addition to the poker table and chairs, you may want to create a seating area with a sofa and arm chairs, if there's enough room. Guests who aren't playing can sit down and enjoy a drink until the hand is over. A bar is also an ideal addition to a poker room because it allows you to easily mix cocktails during the game. If you don't have space for a full bar, a bar cabinet or cart is a good alternative.

Lighting

Lighting is key in a poker room. You and your guests should be able to easily read your cards, but you don't want the light to be too bright or harsh. Place an overhead fixture just above the table. Decorative pedant lights are a good option because they're available in a wide range of styles, shapes, sizes and colors. Attach the fixture to a dimmer switch so you can easily control the lighting in the room. You should also add other ambient light sources along the sides of the room to ensure that players can easily see their down cards. Recessed or track fixtures work well on the sides of a room. Track lighting is an especially good option since you can direct the heads to distribute light to specific areas.

Accessories

Aside from amenities such as a television for watching sports while playing a hand, you should include decor items that give your poker room personality. If you're a big sports fan, hang framed memorabilia or photos of your favorite players. For a sophisticated look, use artwork prints or black and white photos to decorate the walls. If you want to inject some humor in the room's design, you can always opt for a print from the infamous 'Dogs Playing Poker' series. When it comes to window coverings, choose blinds or shades that effectively block the light so you can control the brightness of the room. An area rug in a bold pattern is an ideal addition as well. Place it beneath the table to really anchor the room.
